Gemstone Care Guide
Keep gemstones beautiful and secure with practical advice for cleaning, storage, temperature, light exposure, and everyday wear.
The Universal Safe Cleaning Method
If you are unsure of a gemstone's identity or treatments, use this safest method:
- Prepare warm, not hot, water with mild detergent-free dish soap.
- Soak jewelry for 5–10 minutes.
- Gently scrub behind the setting with a very soft brush.
- Rinse in a bowl of clean water, never over an open drain.
- Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Ultrasonic & Steam Cleaners: Use with Extreme Caution
Ultrasonic cleaners can make diamonds sparkle, but vibrations and heat can damage many other gems or dissolve treatment oils.
Never use an ultrasonic cleaner on
- Emeralds
- Opals
- Pearls
- Tanzanite
- Turquoise or lapis
- Fractured or heavily included gems
Generally safe when unfractured
- Diamonds
- Sapphires and rubies
- Solid gold and platinum
When in doubt, use the hand-washing method.
Storage & Daily Wear
Most gemstone damage occurs during wear and storage.
- Mohs scale: A diamond can scratch sapphire, gold, and softer gems, so store pieces separately.
- Chemicals: Put jewelry on last and take it off first around hairspray, perfume, cosmetics, and harsh chemicals.
- Temperature shock: Sudden changes can fracture tanzanite, apatite, and opal.
- Light sensitivity: Direct sun can fade amethyst, kunzite, and some topaz.
